Newspaper group call to block BBC iPhone apps
It is also planning to demonstrate more apps for its popular on-demand video iPlayer.
"Not for the first every now, the BBC is preparing to muscle into a nascent market and ride roughshod over over the aspirations of commercial news providers," said David Newell, pilot of the NPA.
He said that the market for iPhone news apps was "a corresponding exactly and narrow commercial space" that would be "distorted" by the BBC apps.
"This is not, as the BBC argues, an reach of its existing online service, but an intrusion into a very closely defined, separate market."
Several newspapers already tender iPhone apps, including the Independent and the Daily Telegraph - which are unrestricted - and the Guardian - which costs £2.39.
Football spotlight
The BBC Trust, the body that regulates the BBC, said that the proposals to set up the apps had not been referred to it for approval but it had been made aware of the plans.
"The BBC Mr Big has advised the Trust that it is satisfied that these plans to cart BBC News, Sport and iPlayer content via smartphone apps deteriorate attack within the terms of its existing BBC service licence and that the plans do not constitute a substantial change to the service."
