    For sometime I have been interested in developing an iPhone app of my own, but mental activity the task far more technical than I would be able to comprehend.
    "Sams Indoctrinate Yourself iPhone Application Development in 24 hours" was published (2nd printing in February 2010) before the new iPhone4 OS was released. This may account for some of the issues I sage, but was still able to overcome.
    This book's focus is towards those with no or very small experience coding (me).
    Divided into 24 chapters or 24-1 hour lessons, this paperback tips the scales at 600+ pages. Acknowledging the soberness of this book, I knew it would take far more then the 24 hours for me breed an application.     Halfway through the hard-cover, I found myself getting pretty confused. For some of the XCode files you download, you may get a communication that the "Base SDK" is not loaded, since it is looking for an older side. If you go to Project | Edit Project Setting, then you can revolution the Base SDK to the new iPhone Device 4.0.

    I've skim a lot of iPhone Programming books and I liked this one the best. They do a first-rate job teaching in one hour chucks. Also, the book has particular projects for each chapter, unlike other books that convergence on one sample project all the way through the book. The problem with those books is if you don't punctiliousness for the project, the whole book is going to bore you to downfall.

    ORDERED IN JULY... IT'S NOW AUGUST 29, AND STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED IT.
    I ordered this element back in July, Its now August 29 and I have not received it. Don't certain where it is? Not enough Tracking information. I am hoping that I will get it in another week. If not I will apprise Amazon and cancel this order for a refund.
    Incomparable Book
    It's a ardent back with an easy read. The author explains things very well.

    Do note that you do privation a slight background in programming.
    Misspend OF MONEY
    This regulations should have been a pamphlet, it overexplains things to the extent that you finish feeling you are wasting your time, it gives you very little communication, I am very disjointed with my purchase of this book, there are other books out there that are MUCH less ill than this, this is by far the worst book I have EVER read. It shows you how to generate minimal features. This book seems that it was written for the 3rd upgrade level.

    Rightful to give a quick review. I have a development background but no learning of iPhone SDK and Obj-C. This book was very helpful. It explained every step and had graphics to show details. You can also download the swatch code. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about iPhone programming. My only commentary is that I don't think a "dummy" can really pick up this words and understand it. I think that a techie background helps. Elated Programming!
    Not Inordinate
    I have gotten through the first 7 chapters of this book. I am succeeding to switch to something else. I just feel like it is engaging so long to actually accomplish anything. And from looking some of the intro videos from Apple, the prime mover seems to be going the long way around the barn for everything. Here is what I want from an happening book.

    1) Outline the structure of what you are going to do
    2) Fill in the pinch code with explanations
    3) Run the code

    - Then repeat this course of action with expansions and improvements.

    Here is the format of this book

    1) Blab on forever about concepts, inserting limping jokes
    2) Code things without explanation, well-grounded saying, we will explain why later
    3) Go back and try to explain things after it is coded
    4) Randomly deflection topics like a stream of consciousness. Oh, why don't we tarry here and worry about an icon....

    I did not realize how bad I had it until I watched an apple developer talk video where the speaker demonstrated the power of Cocoa and Interface Builder to put together an application in an hour that does more than what I have gotten so far out of 7 chapters.

    I honourable don't trust that this author is really sharing from his prodigious understanding of the best way to get things done.

    The Unremarkable for "For Dummies"
    Like most of the "For Dummies" software maturation books this one gives the reader a good run course in application development. Unfortunately, it shares the "For Dummies" propensity of letting typographical errors through the editing deal with. Luckily, I did not see any unintentional errors in the sample jus canonicum 'canon law', so the book is not worthless.

    This is not a reference for Objective-C. If you want an Aspiration-C reference, look elsewhere.

    i was the brisk owner of this book for a few days, until i had the time to interpret the introduction. the section in the intro called "addle-pated assumptions" starts off by telling readers that you have to have an intel based macintosh with the latest OS to note iphone apps. this is unclear. is that a foolish assumption that people pressure and you can also write apps on a PC, or is it a foolish assumption that the authors have made, that readers would already own a mac? what with living in japan and being in america for a absolute week for a wedding, i returned this book. it's too big to take back to japan if i have to buy a mac to make out the app i can't find in the app store. i didn't have the time to write to the publisher/authors to find out which assumption is ill-advised.

    I've had two other people refer to this and read it already.
    This is a considerate marketing book on how to put together a shop that does these kindly of applications, and give a lot of suggestions on viral marketing strategies. It is for the iPhone, and in non-exclusive, gives a lot of iPhone references, but the two people who borrowed it were Droid developers, and liked it's marketing near. Much of the content is generic to phone application developers, and how to recommend their product as well as setting up a business.

    It doesn't give a lot of detail on event, and perhaps that is a weakness of the book, I guess it assumes you are or would charter out a programmer. It does give you some info on how to formulate a practical idea for an application, and how to get set up as a developer with Apple. It's really not that much contrastive getting set up to work with Droid, so that's still helpful news to other phone application developer types.

    Target marketing is actually a key, and how you promote, can make you or break you. A friend recently called me targeting an application that would helpers stupid girls who get photographed naked by their boyfriends, fast their pictures on their boyfriends phone. I pointed out if they were that doltish they wouldn't think to buy the application, and probably the boyfriend would not like his own phone encrypted against him! It was in fact more marketable as a secured photo or picture album for the phone holder, and after we talked he agreed. One mans hammer is another mans potato masher, you have to find the preferred market, and this book can help.

    This study is a bit late as this was for the 3.0 SDK... I read it when it was still modern and it was great. The one caution I would give is that Erica is a skillful programmer and knows her way around the iPhone SDKs (and then some) very well. The "and then some" is the cautionary note... she often uses examples that are front of the SDK that may not work in future upgrades... she warns you not to use, but it is so toothsome.
    Well recommended for experienced developers
    Erica Sadun's regulations and code are excellence itself. I started out with Sams Instil Yourself iPhone Application Development in 24 Hours, which is a fine laws. However, as someone with several years' coding experience (and none on Apple platforms), I could have jumped freedom into this book and found everything I wanted or needed.

    The examples bod on each other, starting from the simplest implementation to rich and complex ideas. However, even the first sample in each chapter is grounded in a few pages of background message. This provides the context for using a control or importance that is often missing from Apple's documentation. And the complex examples are of use and not contrived. Unlike tutorial books that might at with an app idea and reuse it past its useful existence, Sadun strikes a thoughtful balance between structure on the code that has come before and breaking out with a new code common.

    Finally, the online repository of the source practices is a goldmine. The author has taken the time to keep on to revise her code as she or her readers report issues.

    All in all, an excellent tome. I am looking forward to the inevitable (I count) iPad + iOS 4 update.
    arithehun: Is Material OpenGL Throughly Covered?
    I am a 14 year-old who is very interested in iPhone unfolding. I have begun learning many computer languages, but have always stopped scarce because of 1 or both of the following reasons:

    a) I saw no point in learning this policy; i.e. It had no real purpose, it was outdated, it didn't absolutely use programming, etc.
    b) I was unable to find antiquate resources for my developing party line

    Then I saw the Xcode. By far, it is the most superior compiler I have ever seen. I status Microsoft Visual C++ and Dev C++ only 3/5, while I give this 5/5. So, I am a expeditious, intuitive learner, and I find iPhone development very straight-foster, logical, and proper. So, with some personal information for credentials, I have two questions to ask. One is: Do I really need to buy a beginner tome if I know basic Objective-C, or can I just keep money (I need to watch myself, I also need to buy a Mac) and buy this engage. Also, I was wondering if this covers enough OpenGL to create a 3D application, and albatross models that I will create with Blender into it. I need advanced behaviors such as if something hits window-pane, it needs to create an appropriate crack. I be sure that these are part of Blender's physics functions, but does this blanket in its graphics section how to put these functions into use. Thanks for the living expenses and advance, and also for finishing this really long, wearisome "review." Please comment, so I will be notified.
    Very decorous, for what it sets out to do.
    I found this to be luminous, if you keep in mind what it is meant to do, which is to illustrate advanced iPhone techniques through _snippets_ of cryptogram. For lots of things, it made think quite a bit about what I was reading. I also identify I haven't had to go back to my Objective-C book so much since I got this. I read through it lickety-split and go back to it for reference now.

    It is not:

    a) Any kind of teaching oriented physical, sorry.

    The points made about file contents, such as the need of .h files are correct, as far as they go. I personally prefer to look at minimalist rules. Separation between .h and .m files is essential, in production jus naturale 'natural law'. In a book's code listings, not so much. Now, she probably said this somewhere in the intro, but it seems rather unhidden in context anyway.

    If you don't know you should separate interface declarations see b).

    b) An intro to iPhone situation. Or to development in general.

    There is little overall teaching in the book. What there is are detailed recipes about how to approach permanent types of problems. Some of them are pretty advanced techniques, from what I can arbitrate. It doesn't hold your hand to tell you how to system, what classes are for, etc... It doesn't even provide an entire picture of iPhone development or Objective-C best practices. You are hypothetical to know this already. I don't mean to be rude or dismissive by that proclamation, that's just what the book is like. If you are somewhat of a beginner, you could use it, but in wing as well as to other books.


    Now, there are some shortcomings. But I haven't seen the following addressed in other advanced books either.

    1. The IDE and its compilation, linking and strengthen path behavior.

    I usually work with interpreted languages. As a conclusion I find it somewhat problematic to troubleshoot errors involving 3rd dinner party frameworks. Not all that much help in this book, though she does boards build targets and the like. Some of this stuff is in all likelihood basic C/Objective-C concepts, but the IDE does bad-tempered you don't necessarily pick up hints that a command profile compile/link cycle, or using cover, would show.

    2. Unit testing coverage.

    SenTestingKit and OCMock are, in my id, an essential addition to a programmer's toolkit to give birth to quality programs. How difficult would it have been to cover them? Again, I haven't seen much coverage elsewhere either, but that's not to say it is isn't sorely missed here.

    3. How to combine source control with SVN or CVS.

    It would have been nice to be told how to snare up Xcode to Subversion. Not done. Author seems to be a git fan, as the source lex scripta 'statute law' is hosted on git. And git is not supported in XCode 3.2.

    I think a far-sighted coverage of SVN or CVS would have been welcome in the chapter about the XCode IDE.

    4. No "raw sql" on SQLite, only Sum Data coverage. That is a subject covered by other books.

    Most luxurious resource for developing without Interface Builder
    A patron needed an iPhone application written such that it made no use of Interface Builder. Perhaps an curious requirement, but c'est la vie, and I wasn't sure where to get started. Most iPhone books and tutorials I had seen up to this full stop assumed you were using Interface Builder.

    I can't affect to the alleged errors pointed out by other reviewers, as I have not pore over this book carefully, but it proved to be a great resource for showing me what I needed to do to jot an IB-less iPhone program. At this, at least, the book excels.

    i am surprised by some of the reviews this regulations is getting. personally..i think is WONDERFUL register...BUT not for beginners. i think if you already have a handle on things, this record can REALLY push your understanding to another limit. if you be to be held by the hand..step by step then please dont get this earmark, i totally understand where the other reviewers are coming from( YOU DONT Figure APPS WITH INTERFACE BUILDING IN THIS BOOK ... everything is from extempore 100% code ). ...this book is a MIRACLE.

    Whats with all the complaining about how the api's and trick capabilites SHOULD be??? who cares, keep your opinions to forums and blogs, no one wants to present about this who is starting out. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth as willingly as you start reading.. asked myself the question, why is this guy even scribble literary works about the topic if he's so annoyed with the constraints?! Forget it, too frustrating to lift any constructive progress.
    Well the WORST iPhone programming book out there
    I have all the iPhone programming books - Apress, PragProg, Hillegas, et al. This is handily the worst of all of them. This is the only iPhone book I wish I hadn't all in money on. Other reviewers have already commented on the disjointed composition and confusing approach this book exhibits so I won't redo more of the same. The most disappointing thing for me is that O'Reilly used to be my #1 choosing for technical books. Never again.
